Question 5-How did you attract/address your audiance?

This is my directors commentary. This will tell you what is happening in the shots and why we made these different choices.

Question 7-Looking back at your prelimanary task, what do you feel you have learned in the progression from it to your final product?

For our preliminary task we had to make a short video of a conversation between two people. Only thinking about very few things these included use a variety of shots and follow the 180 degree rule. I felt that i did this. If you know look at the final draft of my media piece I feel like I have come a long way from the start of the year. In the preliminary task I did not even think about the mise en scene when completing the task in the final draft I felt that I thought about the mise en scene and we had to revolve our shooting schedule around the weather due to this as we wanted the mise en scene to be right, if this was at the start of the year I would have probably just film ed the shots and the mise en scene would have not been as good as it was. Also we had to think about costume (part of mise en scene). At the start of the year although we did not have  any costumes to change into and it wasn't a big deal because what we was wearing was suitable anyway I still would have never thought about the costume in the way that I did in the final draft. Also with the preliminary task some of the shots were very blurry and we did not bother to re shoot them. In the final draft we watched back all our shots and made sure that they were perfect if they were not we would shoot them again most of the shots we filmed three times just so we had back up just in case something went wrong, in the preliminary task I would have never done this and would have just used the poorly shot. A good example of how far I have come would be the editing at the start I didn't really know how to use adobe premier pro. I didn't know how to put fades in all I could really do was drag the different shots in and put them together. Now I can do various different things on Adobe like fades in and out. During the preliminary task I couldn't really edit at all but during the editing of the final draft I felt that I helped out in the editing of the final draft for example with the titles in the preliminary task I didn't know how to do the titles but in the final draft I was regularly doing the titles.

Therefore, I believe that I have learnt a lot of information and my filming skills and overall media knowledge has increased if you were to ask me about some of the shots that we used in our final draft at the time that we was completing our preliminary task I would have had no idea. For example at the time of the preliminary task I had no idea what a dutch tilt is and we used one in our final draft. I also would have not known what a eye line match is we also used one of them therefore I feel that I have progressed massively in media since the start of the year
This is the final draft

This is the preliminary task

Question 6-What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

In this question I will be speaking about the technology's that I used during the making and editing of my media piece.

This me using da font we used this to find a font that we would use for our distribution company logo. If we did not have this piece of technology we would have had to use one of the fonts that are pre loaded on the editing software we used. Therefore it made our media product more able to be tailored to what we wanted it too look like. This helped us add to the meaning of our piece as if we used a font that was round and neat it would not really represent the genre in the way that we wanted therefore we could use a font from da font that we felt would represent the film in a better way and give the audience a clearer understanding from the start.

This is me using prezi. Prezi is a presentation website, that i used in the making of our media product.

This is me using tube chop. Tube chop is a website that lets you cut up YouTube clips and present them.
This is me using YouTube. YouTube is a site were people upload videos on various different things. We used it for some of the conventions of an opening sequence I feel that this added more meaning into the final media piece as we could see other films opening sequences and this gave us some ideas for shots. Therefore we could have a better final piece as without this we would have had to use shots from the top of our head and they would not be as effective as the shots we could have used in the final draft.

This is me using blogger this was very helpful to me as I could document what i was doing and what i needed to do helping me get organized. Therefore I would have more time to think about the final draft rather than organizing my work if it was in paper form.

This again is YouTube.
This is blogger We used blogger to upload our work research and various different pieces of work.

This is me using Photoshop I feel that this was a huge help in making our final draft mostly in the making of our distribution company logo. We would have never been able to make the production company in the way that we envisaged. We really had a chance to express our creativity this was really all due to this software. And this really helped us. This also added meaning as without it we would have never been able to create an effective production logo therefore we added a better production logo and this added meaning to the piece as we could have represented our film in a better light as we could add more colors and add what we wanted to do and give the audience the right impression of what we are doing.

This is a Photoshop shot again.
This is a Photoshop shot again.

This is using adobe Premier this was a huge bonus to us without it i don't think we would have never been able to produce the final piece that we did as we would have not been able to edit the piece in a very good way and the piece would have been very poor as the editing would have not flowed very well. We added meaning as we could add more sound effects and fades in the piece. This would have created meaning as without the sound effects the audience would have been bored and with the fades this would have helped made the final draft flow smother and slicker meaning it is easier to watch adding meaning in that way.
This is me using the DSLR camera this was a very important piece of equipment as it was very sharp filming and was not very complicated to use therefore we could film our piece in very good quality and it would look at lot better because of this. Also we could create meaning as with the DSLR cameras we could track in, this would have helped to create meaning as without this feature we would have had to have boring close ups rather than tracks which look a lot better and will help to move the piece on rather than having rigid close ups all the time a track would be used to ease into the next shot adding meaning as the audience would be more interested as the whole piece would flow a lot easier Also if we used a camera with very poor quality this would make the meaning seem unclear therefore having this camera was very helpful in creating the meaning. For example the opening shot was only available to us because we had the DSLR cameras without them the shot would have not been possible because we used a track to add meaning and the DSLR cameras helped us do this well.

This is the tripod. We used the tripod to keep the camera balanced and help with the filming of all the shots. The tripod was of huge importance to us as without the tripod we would have had shaky shots and would have not been able to film most of the shots we did. This helped us create meaning in the following ways we could use the tripod to steady the camera but also we could film a lot more shots to add meaning. For example the dutch tilt we used at the start of the opening sequence was only possible because of the tripod. Therefore we could add meaning in the piece thnks to the steadiness of the tripod and the movement.
This again is the DSLR camera.

Overall I feel that these technologies were of huge importance as if we did not have them we would have not got the final product we ended up having and it could have looked very poor compared to what it did look like and when we put all these technologies and equipment together I felt that we was able to get across the meaning very well.

Question 4-Who would be the audience for your media product?

Question 3- What Kinds of media institution might distribute your products and why?

1.
A film distributor is a company or individual responsible for the marketing of a film. The distributor may set the release date of a film and the method by which a film is set to be released and made available for viewing: for example it could be released straight onto DVD or may be released in cinemas. A distribute will also make the decision on things like whether to release the film on DVD and if to make it a Blu Ray and various different decisions like these once the movie has been released. We decided to use the distribution company of vertigo films. The reason that we chose to to use them is because they distribute low budget indie thriller films from England.

The production company may be directly responsible for the funding of the film this may be done in various different ways for example through parent company, partners, or private investor/s. It handles the budgeting, scheduling, scripting, the supply with talent and resources, the organization of staff, the production itself, post-production, distribution, and marketing. Production companies are often either owned or under contract with a media conglomerate, film studio, entertainment company, or Motion Picture Company, who act as the production company's partner or parent company. This has become known as the "studio system". They can also be mainstream independent or completely independent. In the case of TV, a TV production company would serve under a television network. Production companies can work together in co-productions. We chose to use psycho productions as our production logo the reason we chose to use this is because we felt that it would represent our film and the genre in a very good way and let the audience know what they are in for.

This is the difference between the two. To summarize the distributor will usually handle things once the film has been shot. And the production company will usually handle things before the movie has been shot.

2.

What is the genre of your film? Thriller

What is the target audience of your film? People that like low budget thrillers and independent British films

What is the budget of your film? Tens of thousands.

How will your film be released? art house cinema

What is the title of your film? Blackout

What certification would your film have? 15 because there will be strong language at frequent points and there will also be violence.

3.

The kind of films that vertigo film produce are small low budget films like the Sweeney and a haunted house these are all very small budget English thriller films. I would consider to be a medium sized distributor. and they are reasonable successful. I think that they would target people that are mostly in England.

I believe that we have made a good choice on our distribution company.
4.

The name of our production company is psycho productions. We have chosen this name because we feel that it links very well with our film. Because of this we feel like the audience will know that our production is a thriller and get a better understanding of what the film is about.

The logo we created portrays our company very well because the font is very out of the ordinary and is not a clear pretty font and could be seen as strange or maybe even twisted again something that we feel portrays our film very well.

Question 2-Discuss how your use of media language has allowed you to create specific representations

Question 1 - In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

The different conventions of a thriller:
Various different close ups:
These are used in many different thrillers these are used to show the audience something of importance to this particular scene these are usually small photographs or a weapon that will give us an incite to the protagonists life.

This is a close up of a woman's hand which will be of some importance to the opening and the rest of the film.

This is a photograph that will be of some importance throughout the film

 Must obscure information:
A successful opening sequence needs to give out some information but will need to hold most of the information away from the audience a good example of this is in the film Sucker Punch (Snyder 2011 US) as at the start of the opening sequence we see the woman sitting down upset which obscures the information why is she sitting down we then see a dead body which clarify some information but doesn't tell us why she is dead both of these examples are good indicators that the opening sequence of sucker punch is on the right lines to be very successful but will need to do all the other conventions to be a very successful sequence.

Another film that obscures information very well in its opening sequence is Brick (Nolan 2005 US). We see the man sitting looking at the dead body this is obscures information because we don't see how she died and who did it but it lets us know that she is dead. This is a very good opening sequence for obscuring information as we see a lot of information but there are a lot of loose ends that need to be tied up over the course of the film.

 Titles:
All movies will have a title sequence this lets you know who starred in the film, the director etc. These are very important as you will need to know who directed the film but also to settle the audience down. If the director choose to jump straight into the action the audiences minds may not be focused and settled and may not be concentrating fully on the movie and may miss some valuable information and not enjoy the movie. Sixth Sense (Shaymalan 1999 US) has a very good title sequence.

Make you ask questions:
A good opening sequence will make you ask questions about what you are seeing and what you want to happen next. The reason that it will make you do this is it will want to keep you thinking about what is going to happen next as the director will want you to keep focused on the film at all times. A good opening sequence for this is brick.

Introduce some characters:
This is very important to the opening sequence as if we didn't see any characters we wouldn't know what to expect from them through out the movie as you will usually see what some of the characters will be like but you do not want to see all of them. This is very similar to obscuring information as you will only want show the audiencve a snippet of the movie to give them a taste of what the characters will be like. A good example of this would be in the movie the dark knight rises.

Having a male protagonist:

In thrillers you will usually have a male protagonist. This is because they are stereotypically seen as the 'dominant' sex. In thrillers the protagonist will usually have to be very strong and clever as they are usually having to solve something and kill someone or something along the way.

 Low key lighting:

This is usually used in thrillers to create mood. They will also use the low key lighting to show that the movie may be a bit dark and there is also the element of surprise linked with the darkness.

Our opening sequence:
Close ups:

We used many different close ups in our opening sequence these are used to show a piece of interest in the film these can be various different things for example a photograph or maybe a gun. That will be a very important in the film.
This is a close up of the protagonist looking out of
the window after hearing a sound. This shows
what sort of character he is that he is
very paranoid about what goes on outside.

This again is a close up to show what the protagonist is
like. He is writing notes on what he is seeing walking past his
house this shows us what sort of character he is again.

Must obscure information:
In a thriller it is very important to obscure information when in a thriller movie especially to leave the audience wanting to carry on watching the movie.
This is obscuring information from the audience because you cannot
see the two peoples faces meaning that you are trying to work out who
they are and what they are doing.

This like the image above is obscuring the identity of the
person in the movie and we will want to know what he is doing there
and whey he is there.

  Titles:
Titles are a big part in film they show lots of different things about the movies background and what sort of movie it will be. We chose our distribution company to be Vertigo Films. We chose this becaue we did lots of research and this seemed like the best option. Our production comany name was chosen by the group we chose this name because we felt it was a good fit for our film.

Make you ask questions:

This is a lot like obscuring information this will be needed for the audience to have the hunger to carry on watching the film.
This will make the audience ask questions like what
is he doing and why is he writing them things.
This will make the audience want to carry on watching the movie because
this is not usually seen.

This will make the audience ask questions like what is he looking at
and they will want to watch on because they will be intrigued
by what they are seeing and do not know what
they could see next.

Having a male protagonist:

We choose to follow the convention of having a male protagonist because we felt that this would make the audience feel that the film was easier to understand.

This was our protagonist
Low key lighting:
Low key lighting is a very regular thing in thrillers and is used to show danger and the unknown.

This is low key lighting used in the instance to show the
mess in the room to make the character seem messy
and unstable the use of the low key lighting
further develops these points.

The low key lighting is used in this shot to
show the mystery of the protagonist.
