Sounds

This sound could be used in our sequence as I feel that it has a sad feel to it. I think we could use this when the flashback of his mother is being shown this will add a deeper meaning to the sequence and will really make the audience feel the sympathy for the antagonist.

This has a sad feel to it also but has a bit more of a creepy feel rather than the last piece of music. This could be used when the flashback has finished and the antagonist is changing. This will be a key piece of music as it will show the "darker" side of the antagonist.

This is a very creepy feel to it. I think we could use this piece of sound in our sequence because it could show that the antagonist has changed is no longer the happy man you see before.

The sound we chose:

We decided to use these sounds because they will compliment the piece very well because they fit very nicely with the scene we will be seeing for the first one we could use this just after the flashback to show the antagonist has lost his way a little bit. And for the second piece we could use this as the voices in the mans head this would compliment the scene well because the voices are a very important part in the illness and if we can get this creepy sounding voices it will tie in well with our piece. The last piece we will use to go against the conventions of a thriller and show how the man is having a break down.

Key frames

In this shot we see the mans book of all the people that pass his home and what he has to say on them. This is a key shot because this book will have a very big part of how the character acts and the audience will get a better feel about him then.

This is the pictures of the people so just like the book it will give the audience a key incite into the antagonists mind

In these two shots we see the persons house this will set the scene and how he goes about his business. And in the other show we see te start of the flashback and him not wanting it to happen.

In this shot we see the antagonist working on his book and analysing what he saw during the day.
In this shot it will be a close up of the main characters book. In this book contains the deatils of all the people that walk past his house as he is very paranoid.

In this shot we see a flash back to his wives dead arm with cuts and bruises all over it.

Plot Synopsis

Vox Pops

From our Vox Pops we learn that we learnt that we could use a weapon of some sort in the opening maybe in a shot. We know this because when doing the vox pops the majority of the people said that they would expect to see a murder weapon, therefore I think that it would be a good idea to use a weapon in our opening sequence.

We also learn that we should use slow paced editing we would use this to build up the suspense of the opening. Most people said that we should use it so I think it will be a good idea as we are following peoples preferences making the thriller more entertaining for people to view.

From the Vox pops we also learn that we should have a male as the main character the reason that we should use this is because the people we interviewed said they are stereotypical stronger than males this will mean that people may not believe that the females are not believable as the main characters in thrillers

The final thing we learn from our Vox pops are we should have some action towards the end of the opeining but have the start more about the unfolding of the plot.

Thriller questionarres

Here are a few of the questionnaires carried out:

Questionnaire 2:

I gave this questionnaire out to 10 people. The reason that i did this is because I wanted to get some primary research on the type of genre that i chose (thriller) and I thought the best way to do this would be to ask people some questions about thriller movies rather than go on the internet or look at a book, and with a questionnaire I could ask the questions I wanted to know the answers too and therefore I believe I can make my opening sequence better because I now know what people expect from the opening sequence of a thriller.

From these results I will be making sure that in our opening sequence to a thriller film we use the following:
Low key lighting
Reveal hints
Make sure the protagonist is serious
Use creepy music
 Use lots of close ups

The two graphs give us the answers for the questions we carried out and what this means for the film would be that we can now get a better understanding of what to put in our opening sequence.

Conventions of a thriller

The conventions of a thriller are:

Titling:
Most thriller films have the titles rolling over a blank screen with some non-dietetic sound playing in the background. The reason they choose to use this would be to set the scene and to calm the audience down. A good example of a film with this in is the movie sixth sense see below.

Camera shots/movements:
Thriller films will usually use extreme close ups and other various types of close ups the reason they will use these in a thriller is because they will usually have small pieces of equipment or something small that is of importance therefore by using a close up or another type of close up you can focus on that with nothing else in the shot. Therefore if they where to miss this information it could potentially make things harder to understand for the audience.

Types of shot angles:

The types of shots we see in thriller films are usually low angle shots, the reason the director will choose these types of angles would be because they show status very well therefore it is a simple way to show the audience who is in control and who is the boss of the situation. This will give the audience a clear idea of who is the main character in the various different scenes.
 Location:
The location in thrillers are usually mainly based outdoors but usually at night. During the day the are usually set in a remote building with no other form of life around them. The reason they are set in these various places are because the antagonist(s) are planning on what they are going to do in the night. And they do not want their plan to be found out so they do it in secret. The protagonists usually are in a secret location as well for the same reason.
Editing:

The editing in thriller movies are usually very slow paced. The reason the editing is slow is because there are very few high intensity scenes in the movies they are more about working out how to stop the deaths usually or who is the murderer. There are usually a lot of jump cuts and cross cutting this is too show what the the antagonist is doing while the protagonist is trying to stop him.

Sound:

The sound in thriller movies are usually high pitched and spooky sounding. The reason for this would be; they would need set the scene and a piece of sound is a very good way to get the audience into the movie. By having the spooky music it will get the audience prepared for the scene they are about to see. They also use a lot of stings in the music

Thriller openings

Editing:
The editing in this opening sequence is very slow I think the reason that it is so slow is because it will add meaning to the opening sequence. Because by taking its time to show you the slow shots it follows the genre thriller but if it was to rush straight into action it will follow action more than thriller as it will make you ask more questions this way.

The editing being slow also eases us into the movie we are about to watch so the audience has only just sat down and the opening will need to settle them as they have only just sat down to watch the movie so there brain will not be fully engaged so by throwing lots of fast paced scenes at them from the start they may not take all the information in straight away.

Cinematography:
The opening sequence of this movie gives us a clear indication of what the movie will be about.

This is a picture of the man cutting his finger with a razor
This extreme close up shows us a man cutting himself with a razor. The film may be about a man that is mentally ill because he is harming himself this is a clear indication that he is mentally ill because if he was mentally well he would not be harming himself. Also something that is very intriguing is the instrument that the man is using he is using a cut throat razor this is not something that everybody has lying around in their home so by using this instrument it could be a clear indication that he is out to damage to somebody. The effect that this will have on the audience would be they will feel sympathy for the man but may also fear for people around him as he looks like he is very much capable of doing damage to somebody as he is clearly harming himself so he will not think about harming somebody else.

This is a close up of a woman being stuck to a piece of paper. We know that the man in this picture is the same as the man in the previous picture because he has a plaster on his finger in the place that he was cutting himself with, this could mean that he is targeting this woman as he has piece of paper with her on it. This could indicate that the woman is in real danger as he could do some serious damage to her as he has done some damage to himself and if wants to harm her she could be in real danger. The effect this will have on the audience would be they will fear for the woman and will no longer sympathize with the man if he is indeed contemplating killing her.

This is a big close up of a man with a line across his face. In this shot we do not see the man but it could well be the man we have previously seen in the past two shots, so by having a line through his face this could well mean that he is planing to kill him or may have already done so. And if it is indeed the same man he has got pictures of two people know so we will really think that he is contemplating murdering them.

Mise en scene:

The lighting in this scene is very much low key as it is very dark in the various shots. This could mean that he is doing what he is doing in secret which could indicate that he knows he is doing wrong, therefore he may be doing what he is doing in a basement. The effect this will have on the audience would be they will no longer sympathize with the man as they will see him as a murderer and he knows what he is doing as he is plotting it they will rather feel sympathize for his victims.

Sound:
The sound in this sequence is very creepy we hear a scratching sound this could indicate that the movie is a thriller because the sound of scratching is very creepy but not scary so by having it it is a very clear indication that we are seeing a thriller it can also be linked back to the man in the piece as the scratching could symbolize somebody scratching to get out so he may have somebody held hostage. The effect this will have on the audience would be they will fear the man.

There are numerous high pitched sounds throughout the opening sequence this could be because the high pitched sounds make people feel uncomfortable and so does the man so by having the high pitched sound it will indicate that the man also makes people feel uncomfortable. The effect this will have on the audience will be they will feel on edge when he is on set they will know who he is due to the plaster on his finger.

Disturbia:

Editing:
The editing in this scene starts off really slow as they are relaxing doing some fishing it then momentarily speeds up as he is wrestling with the fish this is to show the speed and intensity of the situation as he is trying to catch the fish but also wants to impress his father. The effect this will have on the audience would be they will think that they are a family and the son is out to try to impress his dad as they are on this trip.

The editing then slows back down for a while it then speeds up when they crash the car. The editing speeding up indicates that in this situation they are fighting for there lives and need to fight fast so by having the editing fast it shows the pace they are fighting at. Also it is a very panicking situation to be in and it will go very fast. The effect this will have on the audience would be they will feel extremly sorry for the man and the sun as they both have died.

Cinematography:
Image of the two men

This over the shoulder shot shows us that they are a family as the dad is smiling and looking happy on a fishing trip with his son. They may have gone on this trip to become closer and it looks like it has worked. So by being close the audience will automatically feel like they have a special bond that has formed over the trip.

Just before the car crash

This long shot of the car over taking the other car indicates that the father and son are in real danger because the car has gone passed them with real speed but has only just got passed them without crashing therefore the car may want to get in front of them for a reason maybe to do them some damage or maybe to scare them. The effect this will have on the audience would be they will be very scared for the father and the sun as they have just seen them bond and now come close to a car crash

The car crash
This long shot of the car crash shows us that something very bad has happened from a very happy scene to a very sad scene as two people are likely been killed the audience will ask different questions like why did the person do it ?. This will also mean that the trip to become closer hasn't worked as they will now be far away which is very sad to think this. The effect this will have on the audience would be they will feel very sad for the two men.

Mise en scene:

The location was in a river which is a very quiet place for them to go to try to get away from the busy nature of the city to get there relationship going and it was a very nice peaceful town.

The lighting in this piece is high key lighting this very much resembles the first half of the clip because it shows the happiness of the two characters to there together and it is also the day. The effect this has on the audience would be they would think that they are happy together and on this trip.

Sound:

The dialogue in this scene gives us a very big clue to the characters relationship and how they are. For example the young man says "i am having a baby" this tells us he is starting a family and we now know that he is going to be a father which will change the view of him entirely some will think he is too young and judge him and some will be happy for him.

locations

Rom com:

I have chosen to use this location for a romantic comedy the reason that I have chosen to do this is because it is a very romantic location with the sun in the background making it an ideal location to show the romance as the director could use the sun in a very clever way to highlight the romance of the two characters but it could also be a comedy as the sea is there and the director could use that to show some laughs e.g. they could go out in a boat and somebody falls out which could show comedy well.

I have chosen to use this a location as a romantic comedy as the director could use this is a place that they could have met this would open up the story as they could get the story going. The romance could then really get going but could also set up lots of difficulties which may be the whole part of the story e.g. they could forget to set up another date and maybe need to chase each which is the story.

Thriller:

I have chosen this location for a thriller the reason i have chosen this location  is because it is a very remote location with lots of trees and places to hide a run. This will make it a very good location for a thriller as there is not any houses are any sign of humanity therefore you could use this as you can use the whole field and with the trees you can use them for cover an it could be a very good location  to add a huge piece of tension to the movie in a chase scene maybe this is why i will be using this as the location for a thriller film.

I have chosen this as a location as a thriller because it again is a very remote place with a only one exit. Which will again set up for a very good scene in the movie which may well be a chase scene which with only exit it may well be a very tense scene as it is also a very close confined space which will be a very good chase scene because the tension will be very high and a small mistake could well be fatal.

I have chosen this location as the final thriller location. The reason I chose it is because it has a very natural spooky feeling with the graves and the old building. This could set up a scene with the character finding themselves at this location and being very scared as there is a very spooky feel to the graves and with the building has a very scary fell to it.

Action adventure:

The reason that I have chosen to use this as the action adventure location is because it is in a very spacious area with houses around which will mean that people can relate to the action but it also has a lot of space so you can really get a lot of action in the shots meaning you will not need to have any more space to fill in the action.

this is my next location for action and adventure the story behind this could be more of an adventure story of a young boy that lives on the other side of the globe and his dream is to watch the football team he supports and the story follows him on his adventure in which he goes across the globe to watch them and how he gets the tickets etc.

This is my last location the reason I have chosen this is because there again is a lot of space to shoot the scenes in it is also very exotic meaning the audience will be more inclined to want to watch it there will be a bigger audience.
